South Westland Area School joined other schools up and down the country in a show of unity and respect following the tragic events in Christchurch. A hand bell rang at 1:39 for the start of a two-minute silence followed by short commemorative speeches honouring those in Christchurch: One in English from Taylor Priest-Johnson, one in Te Reo Maori by Henare White and one in Sign Language by Indy Nolan and Olivia Monk. This led onto the school Haka, performed under the backdrop of Mounts Wilberg and Adam, a short poem read by Paige Sunderland and a final Waiata sung by the whole school body.
