South Westland Area School is a modern, co-educational, multi-course, Year 1 - 13 Area School, serving the South Westland region, including Ross, Hari Hari, Whataroa, Franz Josef and Fox Glacier.
First established as Hari Hari School in 1865, the school has remained on the current site on Wanganui Flat road for over 120 years, opening as South Westland Area School in 1969. It has always strived to provide quality education by developing and maintaining a wide range of academic, vocational, recreational, sporting and cultural courses to meet the changing needs of its local and wider community.
The roll in 2021 hovers around 110 with most Year 1 – 6 students coming from the local area and Years 7 – 13 coming from the South Westland region. South Westland Area School provides a safe and secure environment for the general education of pupils in Years 1 to 13 following National Guidelines as stated in our Charter (please see below).
The four values of our school are Honesty, Excellence, Respect and Tolerance (please see below) with one value being the area of focus for each term. With these values in mind, students are taught and encouraged to develop respect for each other; to improve self-esteem, self-discipline, tolerance, and to co-operate with others in the interest of learning. They are also encouraged to participate in a wide variety of sporting and cultural pursuits, to develop individual skills and talents to their fullest potential, tying in with our Mission Statement to; Prepare students to meet the demands of life confidently.
The school has a very supportive community and is supported by the Board of Trustees as well as the Parents and Friends of the School.
Our school covers 3 hectares and is very well resourced. As well as the usual classroom resources and a science laboratory, we have a modern Technology suite catering for hard and soft materials as well as food and ICT.
We also have a community library, an adventure playground, full size gymnasium, a permanent cross-country track, a covered 25 metre swimming pool, a full size horse arena as well as extensive playing fields and sealed netball/tennis courts.
Outdoor education resources include kayaks, optimist yachts and tramping equipment plus a near completed Saltwater Hut for EOTC opportunities.
