EXTREME SCIENCE - 23 October 2019
On Wednesday, 23 October, 3 Science educators from the Otago Museum visited our school as part of their outreach programme to bring engaging, hands on science to remote locations around New Zealand. Because this was funded by MBIE Unlocking Curious Minds, they were able to come along to South Westland with all their amazing equipment for free!
Our three amazing presenters spent an hour with each class during the day. The topic of the day was "light" and they engaged our students with special rainbow-spotting glasses, lasers, thermal imaging technology and more neat gadgets.
An hour was not enough for several of our students, and over 30 people returned after school hours to attend the evening show put on by the science educators. This included a tour of our night sky thanks to their portable planetarium and some people even got to hold fire! There were several explosions, but the biggest and best one ended the night and nearly took out a nearby oak tree. It's safe to say that this was a memorable visit!
We'd like to thank Otago Museum and their sponsors that made this amazing visit possible and hope to see some another 'Extreme Science' visit in future!
